Windows 10 – Should you upgrade or stick to Windows 7 or 8.1?

Back when Windows 10 was launched officially, there were too many reasons cited on the internet that said why you should upgrade to this new version of Windows. Windows 10 might not offer you any killer app but it definitely offers you some interesting and intriguing combination of features that might lure you into upgrading to this version. The heavily improved navigation for all the mouse users, the new browsers, the new facial recognition and Cortana are all rated as some of the noteworthy improvements over what you’re presently getting on your Windows 7 or Windows 8 version. But as every other thing, Windows 10 also has some rough edges too that are turning off the users who have already upgraded their OS. Here are some of the potential pitfalls of Windows 10.

1. Ongoing concerns regarding privacy: You might reasonably argue that Microsoft requires access to all kinds of data to offer you the services that you demand. For instance, Cortana needs to look within your calendar and email. Microsoft makes no bones about the information which it is collecting through Windows 10. The trade-offs between features and privacy isn’t a black and white decision. If you’ve been using Google Drive or Gmail or Google Search on a free account, it is most likely that you’ve already been tested. Hence, if you decide to take the plunge, do it with open eyes.

2. A stuffy OneDrive: This problem only applies to you if you’re using OneDrive in your Windows 8.1 and if you make the mistake of putting too many stuff on OneDrive. For all those who are using OneDrive in Windows 7 and 8, there’s no noteworthy change in behaviour in Windows 10. But in case you’re used to seeing all your OneDrive files in Windows 8.1’s File Explorer, you might be set for a shock.

3. There’s nothing like Universal apps: In case you’ve fallen for those advertisements that say a lot about the wonderful Universal apps, the programs that run on Windows 10, whether on notebook, desktop, phone or Frigidaire, you’re all set for a rude shock. The Windows Store is still a wasteland with some of the most useless apps and there’s a reason why Microsoft takes the responsibility of promoting such illustrious new apps. Although Microsoft keeps changing its plans, the future of universal apps keeps changing often.

4. The Tablet mode of Windows 10 might not appeal to you: If you’re running Windows 8.1 and you’re using it as a touch-first device, you may not like the way in which Windows 10 has changed the system. First, you get the hamburger menu which tucks the entries on the left side of the Start menu and this menu collapses often and when it collapses, it doesn’t show any more tiles. Moreover, there’s the taskbar in the bottom while the window bar at the top auto-hides. You can’t even swipe through the running screen.
