Toyota Etios Cross vs Maruti Suzuki Swift

The hatchback segment of the Indian automobile market is dominated by the brands the ‘Maruti Suzuki’ and the ‘Hyundai’. The Toyota Kirloskar Motors has the hatchback the Etios Liva in their portfolio. They have added the Etios Cross, a hatchback in May 2014 making the segment more competitive. The Maruti Suzuki Swift introduced in 2005 was refreshed in October 2014. The Etios Cross comes in 2 petrol and 2 diesel variants priced from Rupees 5.76 to 7.41 lakh. The cheaper Swift has 4 petrol and 3 diesel variants priced between Rupees 4.42 and 6.95 lakh.

Toyota Etios Cross

The Toyota Etios Cross comes in colours of ultramarine blue, celestial black, classic grey, vermilion red, symphony silver, harmony beige, white and inferno orange. The Swift has colours of pearl midnight black, dignity brown, glistening grey, clear beige, pearl sangna red and silky silver. The Toyota car looks better with an aggressive grille, extended headlamp clusters, black cladding on the sides with silver skirting, a rear spoiler and the carving of the name on the claddings. Revised bumpers, silver accents around fog lamps and internally operated ORVMs are the features of the Swift. The Toyota Etios Cross Safety Features are quite impressive.

The cabin of the top variants of the Etios Cross has a 2 Din music system with Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted audio controls and an automatic AC system. Safety features include ABS and EBD, power windows, power steering, a central locking system, an engine immobiliser and 2 airbags. The top variants of the Swift have an auto AC, a CD player with Bluetooth connectivity, electric ORVMs with blinkers, power windows rear wash wiper, rear parking sensors, 2 airbags, ABS and EBD.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

The diesel Etios is powered by 1364 cc, 67 bhp engines with mileages of 23.59 kmpl. One petrol variant uses an 1197 cc volume, 79 bhp engine giving mileages of 17.71 kmpl and the other a 1496 cc and 89 bhp engine giving mileages of 16.78 kmpl. The petrol Swifts use 1197 cc, 83 bhp engines with mileages of 20.4 kmpl. The diesel ones use 1248 cc, 74 bhp engines with mileages of 25.2 kmpl.

The Etios Cross has better wheel base and ground clearance of 2460 mm and 174 mm than the 2430 mm and 170 mm of the Swift. The 251 litre boot of the Etios is bigger than the 205 litre boot of the Swift. The Etios Cross and the Swift have disc type brake at the front and the drum type at the rear. The tyres’ size is R15 for the Etios Cross and R14 for the Swift.

A better external appearance and a posh cabin are the plus points of the Etios Cross. The Swift has better mileages and better after- sale services.
